Social networks in the internet and anonymity
In the last years social networks like facebook came more and more in vogue. Facebook counts over 30 million members. The german competitor StudiVZ has 2,9 million Members worldwide. StudiVZ is available in german, english, polish, french and italian. Every User can evolute himself by creating a profil and putting information on it like hobbies, education and contact data. He can keep a friends list, contact other users, upload pictures or just chat. There are several other social networks like Studylounge or unister.

Here’s an example of how it could become a disadvantage to present yourself to the whole world:
50 persons apply for a job. The job contains responsibility and access to secret, internal documents. 30 of these applicants have got a profile at www.facebook.com. 2 Employees from the Personell Department scan the internet to find information about the applicants. Of course they find something.
On many social networks there are groups where like-minded people can meet. Who will adjust someone who is in a group called “against shorthaired women” ? Personal Responsibility also means not to devaluate Person negatively in cause of specific characteristics. This person would have been kicked out of the selection. A second person may has the best grades and a very good education, but also uploads every partypicture and abandon’s many details from himself. What would the boss say about that?
Why should he give someone responsibility in reflect of secret information about the company if he’s not even able to care for his own data.
Why shouldn’t the training company throw a view on portals like StudiVZ or Facebook before adjusting a trainee if its so easy? With a little luck the company can find negative or not wanted characteristics, which makes it easier to delete some applicants from the list.
Of course we do not know who is watching profiles on certan websites. Also we do not know if companys care about the private life of their employees.
Maybe they do not care, but its very easy to get information within a few secounds with 2 mouse clicks. 10 Years ago this was impossible.
Why shouldn’t the employer use this new possibilities, when its so easy and for free?
No one would send a refusal with “due to your profile at…”. Thus it comes that the concerned persons will never know why the application has been refused.
many students would say “The Companys would never make themselves the trouble” or “I do not have to hide anything”. In many cases this is the truth. The more in demand and better the job, the personnel chiefs do more around the best ones to get? For me that sounds logical.
Because a Oxford student omitted celebrated it a punishment of their university was up-hummed.
There the University of Oxford rather the image of a conservative elite university embodied forbade behaving itself in such a manner it to its students beside it.Employees from the university were searching the portal facebook and found 14 students.

In the USA there are many cases where mostly female students did become a victim of stalking not only in the web but also in the material world.
Imagine the following:
“A person with a gift emerges at one time, talking confused things, makes the impression to know you much better than you do.” In the USA this is reality.
For Stalker such social networks are in the Web a found food. Finally everything is so simple.
What can one do, in order to avoid that unwanted visitors receive information about us, which are not intended for them?
Possibility 1:
We do not expose all our personal data, join only justifiable groups and try to behave normally in the internet, thus not differently than in real life.
Possibility 2:
Due to the possibility that certain persons could get some sensitive information about us we do not register at social networks in the internet
Possibility 3:
We are fully anonymous on portal like facebook or studylounge, or/and only a small circle of close friends knows our true identity.
The last option would be that we do not pay attention simply to it, whether unwanted visitors come and investigate on the profile. We just dont care.
How could it be in 20 years? “Due to the reason that you do not have a facebook profile we asume that you are socially not correctly integrated…”
Giant-large imbecility or possibly future music?
The trend to collect data is there. Students of the MIT-College have shown it to us. They succeed to download 70,000 Facebook profiles with a help of a script.
On the 9th december of 2006 someone succeed to download and analyze over 1 million StudiVZ profiles. The stats are available in german.

Rumors circulate that companies download complete portals with all profiles and sell them to other companies. For whom could such information be valuable?Purely practically seen nearly each company could use this information.
May it be due to an applicant analysis or the search for qualified personnel.
I see it as well in the Logfile from my website that there a bots, who visit every single site of mine and download all texts, pictures and scripts.
A few years ago every 2 weeks there came a bot and crawled for information and new content.
Everyone can store your profile and point on you with the finger in 20 years.
Identity Theft:
Someone wants to install a trojan on the computer of a friend of yours. Since nowadays most computers are well secure he decideds to steal your identity so that the identity thief can spend himself as “you” in front of your friend. Thus the identify thief has the donfidence of the victim, because the friend thinks he talks to a familiar person.
The victim receives so notionless the infected file.Sometims the visit of a specific website could be the reason for an infection. In general it would be very toilsomely to attain the confidence of the victim. does it concern on money this is already an expenditure, which is worthwhile itself.
Visions:
We write the year 2027. Google has now a subsidiary named global personnel, which takes over the choice of personnel for other companies. Basis for the searches are over 200 million profiles in social networks such as Xing, StudiVZ, Facebook, Studylounge, as well as numerous data, which are attained from search machines such as Google. On this basis the investigating everything is revealed, it to have an enormous quantity of data for nearly each person. The investigating are not humans, but first Google Bots. They look for Keywords in connection with the applicant name, from which one can conclude negative characteristics. Thus first a preselection is already met. Large mischief? I would have said 1987 that nowadays everyone has a mobile phone would be I much laughed at. One should exclude never somewhat from the beginning…
Result:
Who this text read white at the latest now that one should not behave oneself by any means in social networks in the InterNet beside it, but rather on it respects should which one from itself price gives. Many do not know the fact that any communication is stored and years after can prepare problems. The problem of the data storage is new, we is the generation, which could be affected 2027 by it. 1987 did not give it the InterNet in the present form yet.

A very valid point, though not well written (language barrier i guess).. Its something that we all should start thinking about, and taking appropriate action…
